A non-fiction story about an Austrian seized by the British while in the mountain ranges in north India and escaped across the borders to Tibet, 7 years in Tibet is a real life drama of how Heinrich Harrer and Peter Aufschnaiter entered a completely different world, where they were introduced to a different culture and a unique lifestyle and got to meet the Dalai Lama.

7 years in Tibet was a book published in 1953 and a Hollywood movie released in 1997. It is not actually a story about the Dalai Lama of Tibet, but rather, it centers on the transformation of a man, Heinrich Harrer. A true story of Harrer’s spiritual journey from a Third Reich “naughty” guy to a loving and caring person. It revolves on Harrer’s exploits from India to Tibet. As a mountain climber, he attempted to ascend the unclimbed Nanga Parbat of the Himalayas. As a husband, he left his pregnant wife behind to fulfill his climbing adventure and as a colleague, he endangered the lives of his fellow mountaineers. Unfortunately, he failed to mount the peak of Nanga Parbat and failed to return home.

Harrer was captured upon his mountain descent and became one of the prisoners of war in India. Tormented and

wretched, he tried to escape but to no avail. It was then that he realized he couldn’t run away from the British camp neither from himself.

Luckily, with the aid of another prisoner, Peter Aufschnitter, they fled and traversed the mountain ranges of Tibet for years, and in the process, Harrer gradually changed and became a new man. They found refuge in Lhasa, Tibet. Though the war has finally ended, they stayed in Tibet for Peter found a wife and a new life in the place, and Harrer has no more home to go to, since his wife divorced him while he was imprisoned.

7 years in Tibet introduced the young Dalai Lama at his young age of 14 years. They became constant companions and friends, as Harrer becomes the young boy’s mentor, of everything around the world. It is in the transformed man and the faithful young boy’s unique relationship that one will see a deep and profound friendship, sensitivity, and spiritual love. When the Chinese started its invasion in Tibet, when the peaceful Tibet became a riotous and destructive place, the young loving Dalai Lama requested Harrer to leave for his safety and the Lama stayed for his duty.
