Tibet was occupied by China for over 40 years, but despite decades of being under the Chinese rule, Tibetan people have obstinately refused to be totally subjugated. The Chinese principles were a combination of discrimination and geographic exploitation. These policies were mainly aimed to alter the very character and identity of Tibet and its people.

Towards the end of 2000, the population of Tibet was recorded to have reached 2.62 million, with Tibetan nationalities account to 90% of the recorded statistics. Because of the weather conditions, 80% of the population of Tibet is mainly dispersed along valleys. The population density is quite low in the southeastern part of Tibet since it is mainly covered by primordial forests, and transportation is inadequate in the area.
