The Tibetan people have a rich culture, religion, tradition and society, with great influence from their close neighbors—China and India.

With the past decades of exile and Chinese control, it has not only greatly affected the people, culture and government, but more so in the proclamation of the Tibet anthem, “Gyallu”. Although, it’s not really clear when it was first sung and used, it is true that the Tibet anthem has been in place for the past 60 years or so. It’s been reported that the Tibet anthem was first proclaimed around 1949-1950, when the Chinese controlled and adopted Tibet, while another report states that it was presented to the Dalai Lama after his exile in 1960.

Tibet, with its colorful history and culture, neighboring countries’ influence and contribution, and people’s creativity and resourcefulness, has evolved a unique food taste of its own—truly a taste of Tibet. Its taste may have similarities to that of Nepal, China and India, but there’s this certain bite that makes it distinctly Tibetan.

The population of Tibet is made up of various tribes and ethnicity that includes the native Tibetans, Menpa, Han Chinese, Hui, Sherpa and a small number of Deng people. Despite the tumultuous and difficult historical background, the people in Tibet are generally happy and cheerful. The majority of Tibetans are farmers that are from little villages, and earn their living by growing barleys and raising livestock. The people in Tibet are charmingly optimistic in spite of the grim situation they are presently in. A lot of Tibetans are struggling with poverty for decades, but the dismal reality doesn’t seem to deter them to have fun every once in a while.

Some people may get confuse on where Tibet is actually located. Because of its close proximity to its neighboring countries and its borders, some people may mistake Tibet as part of India or a city of China. Tibet is actually located in Central Asia, with mountain ranges bordering it from its neighbors. For thousands of years, it was able to establish its own culture, religion, and history with influences from other countries; however, in 1949, China took some control over it, thus making it one of its regions. Why these influences, contributions and controls were done, is because of the location of Tibet, which may be best understood through viewing a map of Tibet.

In the past few centuries, Tibet was closed to outsiders. Many of those explorers and missionaries who have risked entering the place where expelled and put to death. But today, after 45 years of Chinese rule, Tibet is made open to visitors coming from different parts of the world. Buddhism has also been exported to the New World, and Tibet started to accept new rays of Gospel, including Christianity.

Years before 1951, Tibet was recognized as an independent country that has its own tax system and postal code. The Fourteenth Dalai Lama served as its government leader at that time and Buddhism was its national religion. However, it is widely known today that Tibet is now legitimately part of Communist China. Some may wonder how it happened, and what led them to this predicament that involved unlawful and horrendous exploitations of the People’s Republic of China.

Formerly, Tibet stands alone on its territory having its own culture, people, land, and heritage. But in the past couple of decades it has gradually been enveloped by the big and powerful force of China. For thousands of years, despite the influences of China, India, and other countries on Tibet, it was never under total control by such forces, not until recently, when the Chinese take over Tibet.
